History

The Metro Media & Communications Association (MMCA) traces its roots to 1984, when a small group of media ministers serving in Southern Baptist churches came together with a shared commitment to excellence in ministry.

These were pioneers in church television, navigating uncharted territory with vision, creativity, and a desire to honor God through their craft. They needed a place to exchange ideas, face challenges together, and build community with others who understood the demands of media ministry. From that sense of purpose, MMCA was born.

What began with just a handful of leaders has grown into a nationwide network representing more than 120 churches. As the needs of the church have evolved, so has MMCA. Today, the association includes not only media ministers but also communications and IT professionals whose leadership roles place them at the intersection of technology, storytelling, and the gospel.

In 2023, the organization changed its name from the Metro Media Ministers Association (MMMA) to the Metro Media & Communications Association to better reflect the diversity and breadth of its growing membership. The revised name came with updated membership criteria, creating space for more professionals to join—regardless of congregation size or budget—as long as they shared a desire to pursue excellence in ministry communication.

Although MMCA began among Southern Baptist churches, it has never been narrowly exclusive. From the beginning, the association welcomed members from like-minded churches. In 2024, MMCA affirmed its Christian identity by adopting a statement of beliefs aligned with the core doctrines of the Baptist Faith and Message. At the same time, it formally removed SBC affiliation from its charter, emphasizing its independence while remaining firmly rooted in biblical truth.

Through all the changes, MMCA has stayed true to its founding vision: to be a community where professionals in media, communications, and IT find not only practical support and technical insight, but also spiritual encouragement for their work, families, and ministries.

Members of MMCA find more than just resources and connection. They become part of a fellowship committed to excellence and united in a calling, to bring glory to God through their gifts, creativity, and leadership.
